A few weeks ago, I ran 4 mile race in Central Park. I was antsy and decided to begin as close to the start line as possible. When the gun sounded, I tried to match the pace of the people around me. About a quarter mile into the race, I realized I was running a 5:30 mile.

I can maybe run ONE 5:30 mile. On a good day. So I pulled back very quickly so I didn’t burn myself out.

What’s amazing is that it wasn’t entirely a conscious decision. I just decided to keep pace with the people around me.
